This course introduces the working methods, basic materials and techniques critical to making sculptural objects.  Formal concerns are emphasized in order for students to gain an awareness and understanding of three-dimensional space, and develop the ability to discriminate between more and less successful solutions. Sculptural objects are analyzed within the context of art history, art criticism, design, and material culture, emphasizing the range of concepts and strategies used by sculptors.  To support these investigations, students further study the field through texts and research travel.
